The word “bumbu” was the name sailors of the West Indies gave to the spiced rum they created for themselves — blending native Caribbean ingredients into their spirit long before commercially produced spiced rum existed. Bumbu The Original is a modern revival of that tradition, produced at the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados — the birthplace of rum — using a combination of continuous column stills alongside traditional 19th-century copper pot stills for character and depth.

The sugarcane used in Bumbu is sourced from eight different countries across the Caribbean and South America: Barbados, Belize, Brazil, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guyana, and Honduras. Each country's cane brings different mineral content and sugar characteristics, giving the blended rum a complexity that single-origin rums cannot achieve. The distilled rum is aged in first-fill Kentucky bourbon casks for up to 15 years, then married with native Caribbean botanicals — including citrus peel, plantain, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg — and rested and re-blended multiple times before bottling. The result is a rum that drinks more like a dessert than a sailor's grog: fruity, lightly sweet, and extraordinarily approachable.
