Citroen CX: Road Test Portfolio (A Brooklands Road Test Portfolio)

Introduced in 1974 to replace the aged but much loved DS the CX and was well received. Often referred to as the last real Citroen the CX was designed by a team led by Robert Operon. Unfortunately, the CX had a rather troubled gestation period. Developed from the Projet L prototypes it was originally planned as a replacement for the BMC 1800 Landcrab of which just one of the Project L cars survives in the Citroen conservatory. Powered by a water-cooled version of the GS flat four engine the original plan was to use a tri-rotor Comotor Wankel unit with a six cylinder air cooled unit. Sadly the Wankel engine option failed due to reliability and excessive fuel consumption problems and due to its tiny engine bay it meant that it could only accommodate a four cylinder engine. While the body and interior were extremely stylish and modern the mechanicals sadly were a pretty humdrum so the early cars were heavy and underpowered by a 2.0 litre petrol engine which ironically are now extremely sought after.
