96pts James Suckling

A vibrant, slightly glossy expression from Comando G full of grapefruit, minerals and berries with an engaging pepper note. Darker in color than most of the Comando G’s crus, it’s more comparable with the red El Tamboril. There seems to be a tad more plushness, fleshiness and polish, with minerally, reactive tannins and a chalky, juicy finish. Pure, racy and long.

95pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A new lieu-dit or paraje red wine, the 2022 Peña la Mora 1er was produced from old-vine Garnacha from 1.17 hectares at 1,200 meters in altitude and a northern exposure on granite soils in the village of Navatalgordo. This is where El Tamboril is, so it has some commonalities and is concentrated, with some meaty notes, yeasts and red cherries. It has the grainy, somewhat Italian tannins from the Navatalgordo village, with freshness that feels unusual for 2022. It's a wine with more intensity (from the cold, it has more polyphenols), but the wine is also cooler, reflecting the higher altitude. It takes time glass to open up in the glass.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 vintage continues the estate’s trajectory of refinement: it’s perfumed with wild strawberry, blood orange, and crushed herbs, underscored by granite dust and rose petal. Fermented with whole clusters and aged in large neutral oak, it floats across the palate with fine, silken tannins and electric tension. There’s intensity, yes—but also restraint and mineral cut, more Chambolle than Châteauneuf.

This is Garnacha redefined: not broad or ripe, but taut, vertical, and deeply expressive of place. Serve with care, decant gently, and pair with dishes that mirror its finesse—like roast quail, mushroom risotto, or simply grilled vegetables.

Winery Notes

Comando G is a partnership created in 2008 between Daniel Gómez Jiménez Landi of Bodegas Jiménez-Landi and Fernando García of Bodega Marañones.  Drawn to the rugged mountain range of Sierra de Gredos, their aim is to showcase the elegance and finesse of high altitude, old vines garnacha.

The name Comando G comes from a Spanish 1980s cartoon based on “Science Ninja Team Gatchaman", a Japanese anime series from the 1970s.   For Daniel and Fernando, the G also represents Garnacha and Gredos.

Daniel and Fernando are redefining Garnacha.  Modeling a Burgundian system, Comando G produces a village expression Bruja de Rozas, single parcel wines they consider to be Grand Cru Garnacha and a rare Garnacha Blanca and Gris white wine.

Vines range from 50 to 80 years old, planted on a composite of sandy, granite, slate and quartz soils.  Vineyards are farmed biodynamically.  Grapes are hand-harvested, whole cluster, fermented with indigenous yeasts in open-top French oak casks, then aged in French oak barrels, foudres, and clay amphorae.

Grape Varietal: 100% Garnacha
