Some of the best wines I have had in my life were by happy chance. Back in 1880, French botanist François Durif had such an occurrence. He discovered that the Peloursin and Syrah had cross pollinated to produce a new grape variety growing in his nursery. After being identified as its own variety, it was called Durif. It is better known now as Petite Sirah.

My happy chance with Foppiano Petite Sirah came about when a customer had asked me for a red wine from Russian River Valley that was not Pinot Noir. This was the only wine we had in stock that fit the description. I suddenly remembered how much I enjoy drinking Petite Sirah. I used to recommend it a lot as an alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon lovers who wanted to branch out, but get the notes that they craved. This estate grown wine is such a great representation of a classic Petite Sirah.

A substantial mid-palate of blue fruits, black tea, baked cherry, fruit preserves and licorice. Notes of toast and oak, with integrated tannins and textural polish on the finish."
