Fuenteseca is the project of Enrique Fonseca, one of the most respected figures in tequila — a fourth-generation agave grower from Atotonilco el Alto who became master distiller at La Tequileña (NOM 1146) in the town of Tequila, and whose aged stocks are considered among the finest anywhere. This 5 Year Reserva is technically an extra añejo, aged well past the category's 3-year minimum, and each release is a true vintage: the harvest year (Cosecha) is printed on the bottle, and the composition genuinely varies lot to lot. The 2015 harvest, for example, blended 62% column-distilled tequila aged in European ex-wine barrels with 38% alembic pot-still tequila aged in French oak — the kind of transparency and blending ambition almost nobody else in tequila attempts. It's additive-free, made from 100% highland-grown Blue Weber agave. Expect dried cherries, warm caramel, cooked agave, and barrel spice on the nose, moving into agave sweetness balanced by toasty oak tannins, drying cinnamon, and richly stewed fruit, with a long, warming finish that unfurls slowly.
