Kōloa Kaua'i Coconut Rum. Kōloa Rum Company, Kalaheo, Kaua'i, Hawai'i — the first and only licensed rum distillery on Kaua'i, twice-distilled in a vintage 1,210-gallon steam-powered copper pot still from pure Hawaiian cane sugar and pristine rainwater from ancient Mount Wai'ale'ale.

Sugarcane first arrived in Hawai'i with the ancient Polynesian voyagers. Commercial sugar production in Hawai'i was first established in the town of Kōloa in 1835 — making Kaua'i's Kōloa the birthplace of Hawai'i's sugar industry. When the first harvest came in by 1837, local legend holds that rum production began quietly alongside it. Kōloa Rum Company carries that legacy forward as the island's first licensed distillery, founded in 2009, distilling all its rums on-site in Kalaheo from pure cane sugar and volcanic mountain water.

Every Kōloa rum begins with the same foundation: pure cane sugar and water filtered through the volcanic strata of Mount Wai'ale'ale — one of the wettest places on earth — then twice-distilled in a vintage 1,210-gallon steam-powered copper pot still. The Coconut expression layers natural coconut character onto that base, producing a coconut rum built on genuine double-distilled Hawaiian cane spirit rather than the neutral grain spirit base common to many coconut rums. The result is drier and more complex than typical coconut liqueurs.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Intense coconut aromatics with light hints of roasted coconut and piña colada undertones.
  • Palate: The initial taste is quizzically dry from the honest 80-proof base, which then opens to fresh baby coconut flesh at the front of the palate. Full and clean with the natural sweetness of Hawaiian cane sugar underneath.
  • Finish: Light toasted coconut, hints of fresh lime zest, and the slightest caramelized pineapple. Crisp and inviting.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Kōloa Coconut Rum taste like? Intense coconut on the nose with roasted coconut and piña colada undertones. The palate is dry at first from the honest 80-proof base, then opens to fresh baby coconut flesh. The finish has light toasted coconut, lime zest, and a hint of caramelized pineapple.
  • Why is Kōloa Coconut Rum drier than other coconut rums? Kōloa is built on a genuine double-pot-still rum base rather than the neutral grain spirit most coconut rums use. The 80-proof bottling preserves the natural balance of the spirit without the heavy sweetening common in coconut liqueurs — producing a coconut rum that tastes like real rum with coconut, not coconut syrup with alcohol.
  • Is Kōloa Rum actually made in Hawaii? Yes — all distilling, blending, and bottling is done at the distillery in Kalaheo, Kaua'i. Kōloa is the first and only licensed rum distillery on the island, using local cane sugar and volcanic mountain rainwater from Mount Wai'ale'ale.
  • What cocktails work well with Kōloa Coconut Rum? Piña Colada, Coconut Daiquiri, Mai Tai with a coconut twist, or simply over ice with pineapple juice. Its genuine rum base and drier profile make it more versatile in cocktails than most sweetened coconut liqueurs.
  • What is the history of rum in Kaua'i? Commercial sugar production on Kaua'i began in Kōloa in 1835 — the birthplace of Hawai'i's sugar industry. By 1837, local legend holds that rum production had already begun alongside the first sugar harvest. Kōloa Rum Company revives this heritage as the island's first licensed distillery.
