Opus One Napa Valley Red 2021

A truly remarkable vintage, the 2021 Opus One showcases the exceptional terroir of Napa Valley despite facing one of the driest years in the vineyard’s history. With only the second-lowest rainfall recorded for Opus One, the vineyard team strategically adapted to the unseasonably dry conditions by cultivating early, ensuring that the vines thrived without competing for the limited water supply. A cooler-than-average start to the season delayed bud break to April 7th, but warm weather in the spring allowed for ideal shoot growth, and flowering followed on May 17th. Although the yields were lower than average due to reduced water, the grapes harvested between August 31st and September 24th exhibited extraordinary concentration and flavor.

The Opus One 2021 is a symphony of seductive, dark-fruit aromas, with crushed cassis, blackberry, and black cherry at the forefront, complemented by delicate hints of violet, vanilla, and baking spices. Bright and fresh on the palate, these flavors are deepened by an exceptionally plush and creamy mid-palate, thanks to fine-grained tannins. Poignant notes of black tea, licorice, and dark chocolate lead to a rich, lingering finish that will reward those who enjoy it now or cellar it for future enjoyment.
