Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year Bourbon is known as a unicorn in the Bourbon community. It is an iconic bourbon created to commemorate the legacy of Julian P. Van Winkle, Sr., affectionately known as "Pappy." His journey began in 1893 at W.L. Weller & Sons, where he crafted a reputation for excellence in bourbon, ultimately becoming President of Stitzel-Weller Distillery. Despite the challenges faced when bourbon sales declined, Pappy's commitment to quality remained unwavering. His son, Julian Jr., sold the business in 1972, a decision he came to regret. To preserve the family legacy, Julian III took the reins in 1981, navigating a market that was indifferent to premium bourbon. Undeterred, he invested in the Old Hoffman Distillery and focused on quality over advertising. His dedication paid off when he received a 99/100 score in 1997, leading to partnerships that would secure the future of the Van Winkle brand. In 2002, Buffalo Trace began producing the bourbons, ensuring the continuation of Pappy's legacy with his original recipe, thereby allowing fans of the bourbon to enjoy its exceptional quality for years to come.
