History
Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year Bourbon is an iconic bourbon created to commemorate the legacy of Julian P. Van Winkle, Sr., best known as "Pappy" by those who knew him and loved him. Pappy began working at W.L. Weller & Sons in 1893 as a traveling whiskey salesman and eventually became the President of Stitzel-Weller Distillery. During this time, he sold Old Fitzgerald and earned an outstanding reputation for his commitment to a fine bourbon. His vow is still honored today. Following a challenging period for bourbon sales, Pappy's son, Julian Jr., sold the business in 1972, which he later regretted. He formed "J.P. Van Winkle and Son" to keep the family legacy alive, marketing bourbon through commemorative decanters and bottling on the side. In 1981, Julian III took over after his father passed away, facing a market with little demand for premium bourbon. Undeterred by the challenges, he purchased the Old Hoffman Distillery in Kentucky to ensure quality storage and bottling. Despite a lack of advertising funds, the exceptional quality of Old Rip Van Winkle gained recognition, particularly after a remarkable 99/100 score in 1997. As demand grew, Julian was approached by Buffalo Trace, which acquired the W.L. Weller label in 1999, enabling the production of the Van Winkle bourbons using Pappy's exact recipe. This partnership has helped maintain the strict quality standards while increasing production for bourbon enthusiasts.
