It's telling that even Togni's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard—the early-drinking wine—needs a few years in the cellar. The barest hint of bell pepper accents bold cassis fruit and notes of wild thyme on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is fairly open and generous, with enough suppleness to suggest only five years of cellaring will be necessary. Classically styled, it's streamlined in shape and long on the finish, ending with mouthwatering acids and soft tannins.

Inviting, with ripe raspberry and black currant fruit stitched with singed apple wood, tobacco, menthol and sweet bay leaf. Reveals a bit of tarry grip on the finish, along with a cast iron hint, but should round into form soon enough.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard is soft, open-knit and an absolute delight to taste today. Silky contours wrap around a core of red berry fruit, rose petal and spice. This gracious, understated Cabernet Sauvignon is a real charmer. Best After 2022.

About the Wine

Tanbark Hill Vineyard Cabernet is made from certain Cabernet Sauvignon blocks of our vineyard and is a wine that is more approachable when young.

Winery Notes

'Our vineyard and winery are at 2000 feet elevation near the top of Spring Mountain in the western hills of the Napa Valley.

We arrived on Spring Mountain in 1975 and began planting our vineyard in 1981, though vines were first planted here at the end of the 19th century. The oldest vines are now from 1985 and our youngest were planted in 1997. Our ten-acre vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. We farm our vineyard ourselves using organic practices.

There are three owners, Birgitta and Philip Togni, joined by their daughter Lisa. Philip is a former student of Emile Peynaud at the University of Bordeaux where he earned the Diplôme National d’Oenologie many years ago while working as assistant Régisseur at Château Lascombes. Philip came to the Napa Valley in 1959.  Lisa has a background in the wine trade and has done harvests in Australia and at Château Léoville-Barton in Bordeaux.'
