Vicario Licorice Liquéur is produced by Renato Vicario and Janette Wesley using organically grown licorice root from their farms in Tuscany, Italy and South Carolina, USA — a farm-to-bottle approach using the Glycyrrhiza glabra root that is the source of natural licorice flavor, distinct from anise or star anise-based spirits.

True licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) produces a sweeter, earthier, and more complex flavor than anise — the compounds responsible include glycyrrhizin, which is 30–50 times sweeter than sugar, and various flavonoids. Vicario’s organic farm sourcing means the licorice root is grown and harvested under controlled conditions rather than wildcrafted or commodity-sourced.
