Yamazaki Limited Edition 2021

Yamazaki Limited Edition 2021 is the first limited edition release from Japan's oldest malt whisky distillery since 2017 — a single malt aged at least 12 years exclusively in Mizunara Japanese oak casks, presenting the full, unmediated influence of Japan's rarest and most distinctive wood type without the American or Spanish oak components that define the standard Yamazaki 12 and 18 Year expressions.

Mizunara (Japanese oak) grows only in Hokkaido and requires over 200 years to reach barrel-making size — it is the scarcest cooperage wood in whisky production, with unique chemical properties that produce the incense, sandalwood, and coconut character that has no equivalent in any other oak species. Most Yamazaki expressions use Mizunara as one component among several cask types; the 2021 Limited Edition uses Mizunara exclusively, producing a whisky where the Japanese oak character is at maximum concentration rather than one element in a multi-cask blend. The four-year gap since the previous limited edition (2017) and the exclusive Mizunara aging make this among the most technically distinctive Yamazaki expressions produced in the modern era of Japanese whisky.
