Exclusively Mizunara Japanese oak casks. The 2022 edition of Yamazaki's single-cask-type expression from the rarest wood in whisky — Mizunara (Quercus mongolica), which takes 200 years to mature to barrel-making size and imparts incense, sandalwood, and coconut notes found nowhere else.

The Yamazaki Rare Cask series isolates individual cask types to demonstrate what each contributes to the distillery's standard multi-cask blends. The Mizunara edition is the most distinctive: where American oak and sherry oak expressions are built on familiar whisky wood traditions, Mizunara is an entirely Japanese wood with no equivalent in European or American whisky production.

Mizunara (Japanese oak, Quercus mongolica) grows primarily in Hokkaido and requires 200 years to mature to the size needed for barrel production. Barrels made from it are porous — more prone to leakage than tight-grained American or European oak — and require exceptional craftsmanship to construct. The aromatic compounds Mizunara imparts — particularly eugenol (clove-like spice) and vanillin from a different molecular pathway than American oak — produce a profile of incense, sandalwood, coconut, and baking spice that is immediately recognizable and unlike any other cask type. The 2022 edition is one of the most Mizunara-forward Yamazaki expressions available.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Warm amber with the distinctive Mizunara-influenced color.
  • Nose: Incense, sandalwood, and coconut dominant — the Mizunara character in full expression without American or sherry oak dilution.
  • Palate: Clove, baking spice, and a warm woody sweetness — the full Mizunara aromatic profile expressing its distinctiveness without competition from other cask types.
  • Finish: Long and incense-forward — the most distinctively Japanese whisky finish available.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes Mizunara oak unique? Mizunara (Quercus mongolica) takes 200 years to mature to barrel size — the longest of any commercially used cooperage wood. Its barrels are porous and difficult to construct. The aromatic compounds it imparts — incense, sandalwood, coconut, and clove — are found in no other wood variety and are immediately recognizable as distinctively Japanese.
  • How does the Mizunara 2022 compare to Yamazaki 18 Year or 25 Year? The 18 and 25 Year expressions blend three cask types (American oak, Spanish sherry, Mizunara) for multi-layered complexity. The Mizunara 2022 is exclusively Mizunara — the most concentrated single-wood expression of this character available from Yamazaki, without the softening of American oak vanilla or sherry fruit.
  • How does the Mizunara edition compare to the Puncheon and Peated Malt 2022 editions? Each 2022 Rare Cask edition isolates a different cask type. The Puncheon uses large-format American white oak for vanilla and caramel at extended contact. The Peated Malt uses peated barley spirit for smoke and peat. The Mizunara uses exclusively Japanese oak for incense and spice. They are three distinct expressions from the same distillery.
