This 'Ankara' fabric is an African print fabric, produced in The Netherlands. It is printed using a wax resist dyeing technique. The Netherlands is the main supplier of these clothes because they date back to when West Africa was colonised. The Dutch wax prints found a market in the Gold Coast, later spreading all across West Africa adopting African styles and motifs. Today, Dutch wax prints are still produced in The Netherlands and have become an integral part of many African cultures. Their patterns carry meaning from everyday life to political expression.
