Don Q Coco starts from molasses fermented with water from Puerto Rico's Rio Inabon, distilled and aged a minimum of one year in American white oak, charcoal filtered, then infused with real coconut extraction and natural flavor before bottling. It's picked up a genuinely impressive run of competition hardware: Silver at the 2013 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Platinum Best in Category at the 2013 SIP Awards, Gold at the 2012 SIP Awards, and a notably strong 92 points from Tasting Panel back in 2010. Not every critic has been as enthusiastic, though — Drinkhacker gave it a B-, finding the coconut character only moderate and the texture oddly chalky, preferring rivals like Malibu or Brinley Gold Coconut instead. Independent tasters land all over the map too: plenty call it smooth, genuinely coconut-forward, and a clear step up from Malibu, while others find the coconut character thinner or more artificial-tasting than they'd hoped.
