The inaugural batch. Michter's Celebration Sour Mash Whiskey — an ultra-rare annual release assembling Michter's most exceptional aged stocks under the joint approval of Master Distiller Dan McKee and Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson. The most significant whiskey in the Michter's production program.

Michter's Celebration Sour Mash Whiskey is the apex of the Michter's lineup — above the 10 Year, 20 Year, and even the 25 Year. It is produced only when McKee and Wilson jointly determine that available stocks have reached the extraordinary standard the expression demands, incorporating components aged across multiple decades. Like the 25 Year, it is not released on a fixed schedule; unlike the 25 Year, it draws from multiple age cohorts assembled specifically for this blend.

Batch 1 is the founding release — establishing the Celebration expression as Michter's ultimate statement. The blend was personally approved by both McKee and Wilson, whose complementary roles — Master Distiller overseeing production and Master of Maturation overseeing the aging program — represent Michter's dual-approval standard at its most rigorous. Batch 1 predates the Celebration's established following, making it the rarest of the three batches in this series.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Extraordinarily deep amber — the concentrated color of multi-decade aged sour mash whiskey.
  • Nose: Profoundly complex — dried fruit, aged leather, deep oak, warm spice, and the distinctive richness that only the longest-aged American whiskey stocks produce.
  • Palate: Rich, silky, and fully integrated — the components blended to a seamless whole that no single-age expression can achieve. Caramel, vanilla, dried fruit, and the deep warmth of extended American oak maturation.
  • Finish: Extraordinarily long — evolving through multiple stages in a finish that distinguishes the world's finest aged whiskeys.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does Michter's Celebration compare to the 25 Year? The 25 Year is a single-age expression released when available barrels meet the peak standard for that age. The Celebration draws from multiple age cohorts — some older than 25 years — assembled into a blend that represents Michter's finest available stocks across the entire aging inventory. It is above the 25 Year in the Michter's hierarchy.
  • Why is Batch 1 particularly significant? Batch 1 is the founding release of the Celebration expression — the first time Michter's assembled and bottled this program. It predates the expression's established collector following, making it the rarest of the three batches currently available.
  • What is sour mash whiskey? Sour mash uses a portion of the previous batch's spent grain (backset or setback) in the new fermentation, controlling pH, ensuring consistency, and contributing continuity of flavor between batches. Most American bourbon and Tennessee whiskey uses this method. Michter's designates it specifically on the Celebration to indicate the production standard.
  • How often is the Celebration released? Only when McKee and Wilson jointly determine the assembled stocks have reached the standard the expression demands. Like the 25 Year, there is no fixed schedule — and unlike the 25 Year, the multi-component blend requires even more specific alignment of multiple aged stocks simultaneously.
