98pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Perchance's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon is a blend of two blocks of Clone 4 planted in 1996. Winemaker Mike Smith picked after the heat wave and after a subsequent rain event. "It was 27° Brix at the time, and the rain dropped it down a degree," he said. "The good thing about Clone 4 in a year like 2022 is that it always carries a bit more color and tannin." Mixed red and black cherries appear on the nose, joined by hints of dusty earth but few if any herbal qualities. It's full-bodied, rich and supple, easy to drink but not lacking for substance, with an elegant, lingering finish. Impressive stuff.

96pts Jeb Dunnuck

A step up, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard has more cassis and black raspberry-like fruit as well as a big, rich, concentrated profile on the palate. This full-bodied, round, sexy effort has nicely integrated background oak, a round, expansive mid-palate, and a great finish.

Tasting Notes

Draped in a majestic garnet-purple robe which is inky at the edge, the wine sets the stage for an immersive sensory experience. The air is filled with a symphony of ripe blackberries, black currants, and a harmonious blend of black cassis which are all elegantly perfumed. From the very first sip, the wine unveils itself as a full-bodied and perfectly balanced marvel. It generously offers a fruit core that is masterfully cradled by meticulously woven tannins, impeccable balance, and a thread of refined acidity. Its velvety texture and polished finesse allow it to gracefully glide across the palate, delivering an enchanting finish that captivates and excites the senses. This rich, and velvety creation envelops the palate and gains complexity with earthy undertones and finishes with notes of aged tobacco leaves, delicate graphite, fragrant anise, and the enticing allure of endless layers of black cherries, red raspberries, and delicate yet intricate spice notes. The journey continues into a profoundly long and satisfying finish which is spellbound and thoroughly satisfied.

Winemaker Notes

The Perchance Estates Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon is an exceptional accomplishment and a testament to the incredible artistry of our winemaker, Mike Smith. Once again, Mike has risen to the occasion, producing a wine that is truly exceptional. This inaugural release is truly a revelation, displaying the profound depth, opulent character, and ethereal essence that defines a genuine classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It perfectly captures the essence of the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard’s amazing terroir.

Mike Smith's dedication and expertise shine through, and his impeccable craftsmanship is evident in every facet of this wine.

It is perfection in a bottle.

Vineyard Notes

In the heart of Napa Valley lies the legendary Beckstoffer To Kalon vineyard, producing some of the world's finest Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Its rich history dates back to the late 1800s when Hamilton Walker Crabb first planted grapevines on the land. Since then, To Kalon has become a symbol of Napa Valley's winemaking excellence and a testament to the enduring legacy of its founders. The vineyard’s exceptional reputation is due, in part, to its unique terroir. The soil is composed of gravelly loam and volcanic ash, providing excellent drainage and forcing the vines to work hard for water and nutrients. The cooling influence of the nearby San Pablo Bay moderates temperatures, creating ideal conditions for ripening the grapes slowly and evenly.
